Warning!!

These tests must only be carried out by a qualified electrician or electrical engineer.
It is suggested that the welding machines and open circuit voltage reducers be checked once weekly.

Test 1:

  1. Disconnect welding machine from power supply. Remove the cover from the Weld Safe unit then insert an electrode into the electrode holder.
  2. Reconnect the power to the welding machine and strike the electrode against a test piece of material connected to the earth clamp of the welding machine.
  3. The contactor should pull-in and the welder should weld normally.
  4. The statice light should change from green to red whilst welding.

Test 2:

  1. With a reliable multi-metre, test the open circuit voltage between the electrode holder and the earth clamp of the welding machine.
  2. If the open circuit voltage exceeds 32 volts the voltage reducer is faulty or the taps setting is too high.
  3. To reduce the taps setting as indicated on the lid of the welding machine, black plus orange = low, black plus pink = medium, black plus white = high open circuit voltage.
  4. If the voltage is still above 32 volts do not use the open circuit voltage reducer as it is faulty.

Test 3:

  1. Disconnect the welding machine from the power supply.
  2. Insert a 20 OHM resistor in the earth clamp.
  3. Reconnect the power supply to the welding machine.
  4. Hold the electrode against the opposite side of the 20 OHM resistor, the Weld Safe unit should not pull-in.
  5. A 20 OHM resistor of small wattage will burn out.

Test Bench:

A simple test bench can be constructed with  heating elements which can be used for determining the ohmage that the Weld Safe activates at.

Warning!!: DO NOT use buckets of salt water as this practice is highly dangerous
